“Text and illustrations work together well, exalting girl power. Princesses everywhere will celebrate this spirited model of independence”
“Whimsical watercolors accompany this high-flying tale of a girl’s empowerment”
Rovira’s dynamically ink-lined gouache art is homey, evoking classical medievalisms like Tomie dePaola’s The Knight and the Dragon. However, his expressive character and animal designs, friendly and funny in the mode of Bill Watterson, invigorate and update this tale with standout comradely and comedic moments. In a story alternately dreamy, indignant, and droll, Pisi and Rovira accessibly sketch out feminist problems that are far from being a thing of the past on an inclusive medievalism canvas, robustly imagining the sky as the limit.
Though the lines are minimal, there is a powerful message that princesses are no longer passive plot devices, and others, like princes, would be smart to listen or a mighty karate chop will send them away. VERDICT This whimsical picture book will make a great addition to library picture book collections.
Critique: Impressively illustrated by the artwork of Francesc Rovira bringing author/storyteller Valeria Angela Pisi’s picture book story about a princess who is locked in a Dragon’s castle — but when brave knights cross mountains and confront danger to save her — she doesn’t want to be saved! Original, clever, and a fun read from cover to cover, “The Princess Away Beyond the Mountains” is an exceptional and unreservedly recommended addition to family, daycare center, preschool, elementary school, and community library picture book collections for children ages 3 to 7.
